1.         Organising Authority

1.1       Avon & Somerset Constabulary Sailing Section & Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club.

      2.       Venue

2.1        Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club, Walley Court Road, Chew Stoke, Bristol BS40 8XN

2.2         Dinghy Sailing Championships will be held on Wednesday, 28th March, 2012

      3.               Rules

3.1        The Avon and Somerset Open Sailing Championships will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS), the prescriptions of the RYA and the Sailing Instructions for the event.

4.       Eligibility and Conditions of Entry

4.1       Competition shall be confined to Serving or Retired Police Officers and Police Staff who shall be the HELM. The crew need not be a Police employee.

4.2       All craft entered in the Sailing Championships shall be mono-hull dinghies and have a recognised Portsmouth Yardstick.

4.3       All competitors must have completed an entry form for the event and paid the required fee before the preparatory signal for the first race of the series.

 4.4      Completed entry form with appropriate fee should be sent to

 5.         Responsibility

5.1       The safety of a boat and her entire management including insurance shall be the sole responsibility of the owner/person in charge who must ensure that the boat and crew are adequate to face the conditions that may arise in the course of a race. Neither the Sailing Instructions, nor any inspection of the boat, limits or reduces the absolute responsibility of the owner/person in charge, for the crew, the boat and her management
The provision of safety equipment and boats by Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club (CVLSC) and Avon and Somerset Constabulary Sailing Section (A&SCSS) is neither a guarantee that assistance can be rendered to any competitors in need, nor acceptance of any responsibility for rescue for competitors. Further, in the event that assistance is rendered to any competitor, The CVLSC or ASCSS or crew of such safety craft accepts no liability for any loss, damage or injury to the competitor and or boat and her management.

The race organisers shall not be responsible for any loss, damage, death or personal injury howsoever caused to the owner/person in charge or crew, as a result of their taking part in the race or races. Moreover, every owner/person in charge warrants the suitability of the boat for the race or races.

It shall be the sole responsibility of those sailing each boat to decide whether or not to start or to continue the race.

6.         Registration

6.1       Competitors can enter the Championship by completing an entry form available to download from the Police Sailing Website [see below] at www.policesailing.org.uk together with the required entry fee or from Mark Fordham  c/o Sports Club, Avon and Somerset Constabulary, Police Headquarters, PO Box 37, Valley Road, Portishead, Bristol BS20 8QJ.  Alternatively, competitors can enter on the day of the Championship at the registration desk at Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club

6.2       Registration for the Championships will commence at 0800 hours on Wednesday, 28th March, 2012 at Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club.

6.3       Every competing boat shall have a valid measurement certificate. The race committee may request production of this certificate for inspection upon registration or at any reasonable time during the Championships

7.         Entry Fees

7.1       The entry fee for the Championship is  

 £10 single handed boats.

 £15 double handed boats

8.        Racing Area and Sailing Programme

            8.1      Racing will be conducted at Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club

           8.2.1     Briefing 10:30.

                8.2.2     Race 1: Start 11:00, races 2 and 3 to follow as directed by the Race Officer

                8.5        The sailing area is marked out by lines of small white buoys. The race marks are red marks with red flags for the numbered marks and white flags for the lettered marks. The numbered marks start at zero at the north end of the dinghy park and go around the periphery of the lake in a clockwise direction. For large open meetings the club also uses large inflatable marks

9.        Scoring System

9.1       The event shall be decided in accordance with RRS Low Points System.

9.2       Championship: If three races are completed one discard will be allowed.

10.       Sailing Instructions

10.1     Sailing Instructions (SI) will be available at registration

11.       Insurance

11.1     Each participating boat shall be insured with valid third party liability insurance with a minimum of £3,000,000 Third Party liability

12.   Accommodation

12.1     Competitors wishing to research local accommodation may find the Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club website at www.chewvalleysailing.org.uk as a useful source of information: 

12.2     Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club offers NO camping facilities within the club grounds however camping is available at Chew Valley Fruit Farm, Bonhill Road, Bishop Sutton, BS39 5TS, telephone. 01275 332 567 (approx 1.5 miles from the club entrance) fees payable direct to the campsite

Chew Valley lake has a large sailing area in a rural setting over 3 km long, access is easy as it is close to two major motorways M4 & M5. The biggest and closest landmark is Bristol International Airport just off the A38 south of Bristol.

There are no overnight camping facilities on the site.
